Hello, this is Torey Hinkson with First Choice Business Brokers Peachtree. Today I want to talk about a very important question: is it the right time to sell your business? That is a question only you can answer for yourself, and if anyone ever tries to convince you to sell, you should probably run as fast and as far from them as possible. What I want to offer is a framework to work through as you evaluate whether it is the right time to transact, and that framework is three simple questions: is the market ready, is your business ready, and are you ready personally?
On the market and its ebb and flow: we live in a fast-moving world. Over the past few years we have seen a pandemic, wars and conflicts, and interest rates rise and fall. A lot can happen that is unpredictable, so I encourage my clients to be aware of what is going on, understand that you do not control it, and focus on the things you do control. With the market, it is important to understand how whatever is happening in the world is affecting your specific industry, and whether the things people say could be affecting your industry are actually showing up in your business.
On the business: when we ask whether your business is ready, financials are the first thing that come to mind, and they are critically important for a sale process. Understand the trends in your revenue and profit, whether they are rising or falling, and your margins, whether they are contracting or expanding. Just as important is the why behind the movement. Are you taking specific actions that drive it, is it market conditions, or a combination? Being able to tell that story in a way that withstands buyer scrutiny positions you as a credible seller and helps you maximize value.
And the last question: are you ready personally? It gets overlooked, but it is very important. Selling a business you have owned for ten, twenty, or thirty years is a major life change. I am not your psychologist, but I encourage you to think through whether you are personally ready, because even a successful transaction at a price that meets or exceeds your expectations still requires you to be ready for that adjustment. The other piece is financial. Whether you are looking to retire and the transaction funds part of your retirement, or you want to fund a new venture, you have to understand what a sale price actually means to you after taxes. There are great accountants and financial planners who can help with that, but it is important to know what you need from a transaction to fund the next phase of your life.
That clarity lets you negotiate from a position of strength. If a number does not work for you, you know it does not work. And if a number does work but we are trying to maximize value, you can negotiate knowing we are at an acceptable point and now focused on getting the best outcome.
Whatever situation you are in, I would love to have this conversation with you. Please reach out through the website, peachtree.fcbb.com, and we can talk. Thank you.
